Zurich North America is seeking a Head of Reserving for the Workers Compensation Line of Business. This role reports to the Chief Reserving Actuary. Our preferred location is our Schaumburg, IL or New York, NY office, other locations may be considered for the right candidate
The Head of Reserving - Workers Compensation leads a team of actuaries responsible for reserve setting and testing, loss ratio forecasting, and financial planning for the Workers Compensation portfolio. This role has primary ownership of the reserving process and IFRS booking recommendations for Workers Compensation and plays a critical leadership role in technical governance, planning, and forecasting across the WC line of business
The position leads the WC reserving view for the Expected Loss Ratio (ELR) recommendations and drives the reserving content for Virtuous Circle discussions with pricing, claims and underwriting. The role partners closely with Business Unit (BU) and Strategic Business Unit (SBU) leadership to ensure transparency, alignment, and a shared understanding of factors impacting loss reserves, financial forecasts, and financial plans for all WC segments
This leader will work closely with senior leadership and drive operational initiatives across the Finance Actuarial function and the broader Actuarial Center of Excellence
Leading an Actuarial team that is responsible for all Finance Actuarial elements for our Workers Compensation Line of Business
Communicate results of analysis to stakeholders, including US Executive Leadership
Leading projects and initiatives to improve actuarial efficiencies
Monthly reporting and executive communication
Providing leadership on processes, as well as off-cycle improvement projects
Communicating information and results to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences across the organization, including senior leadership
Working on Ad hoc requests
Managing and coaching a team of actuarial professional employees, providing regular, actionable coaching and feedback to employees to review progress, recognize accomplishments, support development and/or improve performance
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and 12 or more years of experience in the Actuarial area plus FCAS or equivalent international certification
Bachelor’s Degree and 15 or more years of experience in the Actuarial area plus ACAS or equivalent international certification
Experience leading cross-functional teams
Insurance Industry experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in applying actuarial principles with experience in multiple actuarial disciplines (pricing, reserving, reinsurance) and in multiple Line of Business
Several years of experience with US Workers Compensation Line of business
Prior reserving experience including quarterly booking decisions
Strong understanding of IFRS 17 and US statutory accounting for Workers Compensation
Solid project management and organizational skills to work on multiple priorities, establish and meet deadlines
Excellent communication skills, strong influence, and the ability to partner cross functionally within the organization
Knowledge and skills reflective of a senior practitioner who has progressed within Actuarial positions of increasing responsibility
Experience with Microsoft Office suite and knowledge of statistical analysis software
Strong verbal and written communication skills
FCAS or ACAS

The pay range shown is a national average and may vary by location. The proposed salary range for this position is $201,500-$330,100, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 35%. This role is also eligible to participate in the company’s long-term incentive program
