2 Doctoral positions in Latin and Greek Literature(1+3 years, SNSF Project 'CITE')The Department of Ancient Civilizations is home to all disciplines within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences concerned with the ancient world (archaeology, history, literature). The Department invites applications for 2 Doctoral research positions in Latin and Greek Literature in the framework of the SNSF-funded research project CITE: Citation, Indirect Transmission, Exegesis. Deadline for applications: 19 January 2025.Starting date: 1 September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The project CITE Formed by two project groups in Basel and Cambridge, and led by specialists in Greek and Latin Literature and Ancient Philosophy (Prof. Cédric Scheidegger Laemmle, Basel; Prof. Richard Hunter and Prof. Gábor Betegh, Cambridge), the cross-disciplinary project CITE is dedicated to the study of the indirect transmission of ancient literature and philosophy, but shifts attention from textual problems to questions of meaning, interpretation and transmission history raised by the citing texts themselves. Comprising six case studies which together capture central forms of ancient reading practice across the full spectrum of literary, philosophical and technical writing, CITE seeks to contribute to our understanding of how ancient theories of reading and interpretation are applied and how they can be situated on a continuum of reading practices across interpretative and linguistic communities and entrenched boundaries of genre, language and discipline. Your positionThe successful candidates will work primarily with Prof. Scheidegger Laemmle and Prof. Hunter to study the citation and exegesis of poetry in the rhetorical tradition (PhD position 1) and of Roman drama in later antiquity (PhD position 2); it is expected that they will complete their PhD theses within the project's lifetime, with a view to revising it for publication. The doctoral researchers will contribute to the comparative study of the quotational and interpretative practices in Greek and Roman literature which will be a shared focus of all project members and take a full share in the project's workshops and conferences.Your profileCandidates are expected to have successfully completed an MA degree (or equivalent) in Classics / Latin and/or Greek Literature. An interest in the study of indirect traditions, ancient critical practice and textual transmission is desirable. Candidates will pursue a wide range of interests in Latin and Greek literature and value interdisciplinary approaches and dialogue with colleagues and students; ability to work collegially within an international team is essential. The Basel Department regularly hosts visiting scholars (e.g. through the Basel Fellowships in Latin Literature) and is a centre of scholarly exchange both nationally and internationally. The successful candidates will be offered an attractive remuneration package (salary, social benefits) in accordance with the guidelines of the University, with access to the University's rich programme of Continuing Education, Language Teaching and University Sports.

2 PhD positions in Sustainability Research, focus on sustainable agri-food system governance 100%01.03.2025The Sustainability Research Group at the University of Basel, led by Prof. Dr. Janina Grabs, is looking for two PhD researchers to investigate the governance of sustainable agri-food systems, with a particular focus on the implementation of mandatory sustainability legislation in tropical agri-food commodity chains, in the framework of the SNF-funded Starting Grant Project EXPECT-AGRI. The project EXPECT-AGRI The production of agricultural commodities such as coffee, cocoa, or palm oil is associated with deforestation, forced and child labor, and smallholder poverty. European governments currently aim to address these challenges via the introduction of mandatory supply chain sustainability legislation such as due diligence regulations and import restrictions. This five-year research project aims to examine the impact of such sustainability laws in the supply chains of coffee, cocoa and palm oil. What expectations do these laws create between the regulatory authorities and the companies that trade in these commodities? And how do these expectations in turn influence the shift towards more sustainable agriculture? The project will examine these questions via a combination of qualitative (e.g. expert interviews, Q-methodology, case study analysis) and quantitative (e.g. company surveys) research, including fieldwork in commodity-producing countries.Your positionAs part of EXPECT-AGRI, the successful candidates will conduct longitudinal, qualitative research on policy implementation in three tropical agri-food commodity sectors (coffee, cocoa, and palm oil). One PhD candidate will focus on fieldwork in Colombia, and the other one will work in Côte d'Ivoire. You will further collaborate with postdoctoral researchers and mentor Master's students in the context of the project. The candidates will pursue a PhD degree in Sustainability Research and be enrolled in the University of Basel's Graduate School of Social Sciences. Place of work will be Basel, Switzerland. Both appointments are scheduled to begin on March 1, 2025, or at the earliest convenience of the successful candidates.Your profileApplicants should have completed a Master's degree in a relevant field such as political science, political economy, public policy/administration, global governance, sustainability research, sociology, development studies, or another social science discipline, and achieved a minimum grade equivalent to 5 (out of 6) in the Swiss system. The candidates should have demonstrated experience in the use of qualitative research methods, and ideally have experience in living and/or working in the case study countries (Colombia or Côte d'Ivoire), or more broadly have experience in Latin America or West Africa. We are looking for candidates with a proficient level in English and a second language (Spanish or French), excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a strong work ethic, the ability to work independently, and a high willingness to collaborate. We offer youBoth positions are for an initial period of one year, renewable for another three years after positive evaluation. As part of the very interdisciplinary Sustainability Research Group of the University of Basel, you will be able to work in a scientifically highly stimulating environment. You will join a supportive and collaborative work environment with regular meetings and exchanges. We further support participation in a broad and well-established international research network. You will work closely with Professor Janina Grabs (head of the Sustainability Research Group), and be provided with ample opportunity to develop your own academic profile in preparation for the next steps of the career ladder. We offer dedicated faculty mentorship to support your academic progress.Further, we offer modern research facilities and an excellent scientific environment at Basel University. The successful candidates will be offered an attractive remuneration package (salary, social benefits) in accordance with the guidelines of the University, with access to the University's rich program of Continuing Education, Language Teaching and University Sports. The University of Basel is an equal opportunity employer; women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

PhD position on artificial photosynthesis at sub-zero temperatures within cryo-protective lipidic mesophase nanoconfinement (P2406) 100%position for 4 years, earliest starting date: 1 January 2025The Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) at the University of Basel invites highly motivatedscientists to apply for the SNI PhD programme in Nanoscience and to join the exciting joint project between the University of Basel and the Paul Scherrer Institute.Your positionPhotosynthesis is a critical process that captures carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and transforms it into organic matter, which forms the primary source of the Earth's biomass and energy storage. However, in polar regions and during winters, the natural photosynthetic activity ceases due to the low temperature. This project aims to develop an unfrozen artificial photosynthetic platform using nanoconfinement to keep water liquid and enable CO2 fixation at sub-zero temperatures. Lipidic mesophases have proven effective for other enzymatic reactions down to -20 °C. Utilizing this platform, we will incorporate thylakoid membranes from pea plants, containing all necessary enzymes for photosynthesis. The efficiency of this nano-platform at low temperatures will be tested by measuring the generation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH). Combination of techniques such as small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) will be employed to analyse nanoscale self-assembly and the impact of molecular dynamics on photosynthetic efficiency at low temperatures.Your profileFor this project, we are seeking a candidate with a strong scientific background and a Master's degree in any field relevant for the project. We offer youExcellent scientific and social environmentVery competitive employment conditionsMembership in a very supportive and recognised communityThe successful candidate will become a member of a very active research group and of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) PhD school with ~30 currently supported scientists. PhD position: Spin waves get a twist! (P2402) 100 %position for 4 years, earliest starting date: 1 January 2025We are looking for a PhD student for a joint research project of the Quantum Sensing Lab at the University of Basel led by Prof. P. Maletinsky (https://quantum-sensing.physik.unibas.ch) and Mesoscopic System Group at the ETH-PSI (https://mesosys.mat.ethz.ch/). The student will become a member of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) PhD school in Basel and will benefit from its strongly interdisciplinary environment, stimulating internal SNI events, and the personal support and training offered by the PhD program. The position will ideally start January 2025.Your positionToday's information storage and computation technologies face challenges in power consumption, data handling efficiency, and storage density. Our project aims to develop proof-of-concept novel magnetic nanodevices using spin waves for energy-efficient computation. Spin waves transfer information through spin angular momentum, avoiding dissipative charge transport. Using spin waves for information processing offers key advantages, including Joule-heating-free propagation, making them ideal for low-power computing devices. However, for practical applications, spin wave propagation should be directional and guided – a challenge that requires significant further research, to which we propose to contribute here. Our team aims to experimentally achieve directional spin wave propagation using magnetic multilayers composed of cobalt, platinum, and yttrium iron garnet. Recent simulations indicate that this combination of materials can efficiently realize directional spin wave propagation. Within the scope of the PhD, the student will be guided in developing the expertise in preparing suitable sample and to characterize them with standard laboratory methods (sputtering, magnetization measurements, magnetic force microscopy) and more advanced imaging methods such as nitrogen vacancy spectroscopy and X-ray microscopy.Your profileFor this project, we are seeking to expand our team with a candidate who has a strong academic scientific background with a Master in physics or material science and a keen interest in sample fabrication, magnetic materials, and the development and application of advanced measurement methodologies. Good teamwork and communication skills are required, with a proactive approach to drive forward research performed in collaboration within our groups. We offer youExcellent scientific and social environmentVery competitive employment conditionsMembership in a very supportive and recognised communityThe successful candidate will become a member of a very active research group at the physics department and of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) PhD school with ~30 currently supported scientists. Postdoctoral Researcher (FTE)100%, 01.04.2025The University of Basel, Switzerland, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher (100% FTE) for the project Aspirational Urbanism and the Recodification of Defiance (ASPIRA) The function of a blank sheet of A4 paper in a context of censorship reflects the need to recognize new forms of defiance. As speech is being monitored through different technologies and in a range of arenas from the public square to social media and across university campuses, defiance takes new forms of symbolic critique. In the project ?Aspirational Urbanism and the Recodification of Defiance (ASPIRA)", recognizing defiance contributes to the aim of conceptualizing aspirational urbanism as a way of understanding the function of alterity (alternative futures, speculative possibilities) in shaping cities. Rather than explaining urban change in Hong Kong and Taipei exclusively in terms of tiger economics or the developmentalist state, beyond techno-positivism and growth machine dogmas, ASPIRA recognizes defiance as the agency of urban residents in contesting perceived inevitabilities. The project builds on theoretical work on urban futures, understanding cities as sites for planning, imagining and representing futures. It also recognizes the unequal capacities and risks involved, highlighting the ?cruel" ascriptions to optimism and the potentially devastating consequences of aspiration.
